As part of a series of projects related to the betterment of the public realm of the industrial city of Jubail KSA, Landworks Studio was charged with developing visual and material strategies to improve the driving experience along the various roadways which surround and move through the city: to improve the general character of the landscape along various arteries of the city. The project began by establishing 3 typologies of highway: regional, city, local. From there, 3 distinct characters/styles of landscape were developed to distinguish each particular type of roadway. Special emphasis was placed on the interchanges and overpasses to create verdant thresholds and portals with strong visual language and where drivers would be more apt to engage the surrounding the landscape.
