Porta Romana Coima L1 Competition | Milan, Italy

The design concept for this residential complex, centers around the metaphorical image of the "IYA valley" in southern Japan, known for its untouched, densely wooded gorge and handmade vine bridges. This concept aims to evoke a "hidden green gorge" or "La Valle Segreta," featuring a cascading court with integrated nature and water elements that extend into the parking levels below. The architectural design contrasts the inner, lush, natural landscape with a more classical Italian building aesthetic, creating a harmonious yet dynamic environment that reflects seasonal changes and encourages a symbiotic relationship between residents and nature.

Ground Floor Plan and Landscaping

First Floor Plan and Landscaping

The landscape narrative focuses on integrating environmental and humanistic well-being through dense, cascading plantings that form a self-sufficient ecosystem. This ecosystem features a diverse palette of ground covers, shrubs, trees, and vines that provide habitats for birds and pollinators, improve air quality, and lower ambient temperatures. Rainwater and grey water recycling systems support sustainable irrigation, while native plant species ensure resilience and minimal maintenance. Natural stone hardscapes enhance the lush gardens, and the arrival area includes a central water feature to create a serene atmosphere. Educational spaces and amenities on the upper floors, such as urban gardens and beekeeping areas, promote sustainable practices and wellness, creating an ecosystem for discovery and health.
