Blackstone Power Plant Renovation - Harvard University

Harvard University purchased the Blackstone Power Plant in 2003, launching an ambitious strategic remodel of 19th-century warehouse buildings into office space for the project’s client groups: University Operating Services and an environmental sustainability organization the Harvard Green Campus Initiative (HGCI). The renovation was envisioned and realized as Harvard’s showcase project to guide future sustainable development, environmental awareness, and ecological education throughout the university.
A brownfield site, the Blackstone Power Plant was set within active industrial and post-industrial buildings, with the Charles River immediately to the west. Our task was to merge industrial, office, and academic uses while achieving the highest LEED standard. Our scope included: streetscape improvements along Blackstone Street, pedestrian access paths, site security, loading docks, site lighting, sustainable site measures, plantings, and a parking court to serve for eighteen-wheel fuel trucks as well as daytime staff and deliveries.
